Dr. Ewoldt visits Girl Scouts
Dr. Ewoldt and her dog Josie just visited Girl Scout Troop 8468 in Eldridge to talk about veterinary medicine. The girls had a great time playing with Josie and listening to her heart, and learned about veterinary school and veterinary medicine as a career. Thanks to leaders Betsy and Diane for inviting us.
Chicken Jerky treats may be dangerous
The FDA is once again cautioning pet owners against feeding chicken jerky treats made in China. Numerous illnesses and a few deaths have resulted from feeding these treats over the last 4 years. The incidence of illness had decreased in 2010, but now appears to be rising again. The treats appear to cause either Salmonella (diarrhea and vomiting), or a disease resembling kidney failure (vomiting, diarrhea, increased water consumption, or increased urination). Owners noting these symptoms in their dogs should contact their veterinarians immediately.
Upcoming drug shortage
Novartis Animal Health has announced that its plant in Nebraska has closed temporarily. This plant manufactures Sentinel and Interceptor heartworm preventatives for dogs, which means that these two medications will be in short supply and then backordered until the plant comes back to production. Clients using either of these two medications for their dogs are urged to contact us for further information.
