Dog Park Open for Business!
The brand-new dog park has opened in Eldridge. The park, located under the water tower by the Eldridge Community Center, has two sections - one of which is now open and the second will open in the spring of 2012. Health regulations and use regulations are posted on the fence at the entry. We hope all dogs in the area will enjoy this new park.
Senior Pet Month
November has been designated as National Senior Pet Month to raise awareness of the special needs that senior pets have. Pets are generally considered "senior" if they are over 7 years of age, but this does vary somewhat based on the type of dog or cat. Because pets are so good at hiding disease, senior pets can "suddenly" have a disease that may have been brewing for years. They are also prone to more problems, such as arthritis, heart disease, and kidney disease, just as senior citizen humans are. Here at Scott County Animal Hospital, we have a special senior wellness package which is designed to help diagnose diseases in early stages, and prevent other problems from developing. This allows your senior pet to live the longest and healthiest life possible. See this link to the AVMA Senior Pet Website for more information on senior pet care, including a neat age chart that compares your pet's age to yours.

Tularemia in Illinois
The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in Champaign-Urbana recently diagnosed three cats with tularemia, an uncommon disease in our area. Tularemia is most commonly found in rabbits and rodents, but can be contracted by ingestion of rodents or by ticks. Tularemia can also affect other animals including humans. Tularemia causes high fever, mouth ulcers, swollen lymph nodes and flu-like symptoms. Affected animals and humans need medical care. Prevention includes keeping cats indoors and using tick preventatives like Frontline or Revolution regularly. See our Facebook page for an article about the report.
New groomer!!
We are very pleased to announce that our new groomer, Stephanie Skadal, has completed her grooming training and is accepting animals for grooming on a full schedule. She has been doing a great job in her training period, and we think you will be as happy with her work as we are so far! Call today for an appointment.
New product - Certifect
Scott County Animal Hospital has just started carrying the exciting new Certifect product from Merial - the makers of Frontline. Merial has taken their already-proven Frontline product and added amitraz to it. This creates an even more-effective tick-killing product for dogs with heavy tick problems. If your pet continues to pick up ticks even when using Frontline, or if his or her exposure is high, you may want to consider Certifect. Fall is prime tick season, so consider your dog's tick prevention now. Click here to see the Certifect information.
Grooming services
We are very pleased to announce that we will be able to provide grooming services to our clients again! Our new groomer, Stephanie Skadal, has almost finished her grooming training, and is ready to accept new clients. She has been grooming in a limited capacity during her training, and we have been very pleased with her work so far! At the moment, she is booking only a small number of pets per day so that she can build up her skills. As a result, she may be booked a few weeks in advance, so call early for an appointment! At the moment, we are limiting her services to our regular clients only.

Equine Herpesvirus Outbreak
Following a NCHA horse show in Utah, there has been an outbreak of equine herpesvirus which is spreading across the western United States. This highly-contagious disease is causing illness in several states. Be aware of the possibility for your horse to be infected - and what you can do to prevent this. We include the EHV vaccine in our spring vaccination series, but even this cannot guarantee your horse is protected against the neurologic form. Cross-protection has not been proven. Isolation is your best defense. For more information, see this link to the American Association of Equine Practitioners website and watch for updates on our Facebook page:

Weight loss and arthritis
Did you know that overweight dogs and cats are more likely to have problems with arthritis? Did you know that the arthritis comes from more than just packing around the extra weight every day? New research has shown in both humans and pets that fat itself is inflammatory, and can lead to many chronic inflammatory conditions. Dogs that lost weight had improvements in their arthritis without any use of medications. Just another reason to help your overweight pet lose weight!

Reducing stress helps cats
A recent report from The Ohio State University reveals that cats who urinate outside litterboxes may be stressed out. The research study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association showed that cats who lived in an enriched environment with lots of toys, interaction with humans, and a regular schedule were less likely to show urinary problems and less likely to get sick. This study provides interesting ideas for owners of cats with feline interstitial cystitis or similar chronic urinary problems.

Human medications cause pet intoxications
The National Pet Poisoning Hotline released a report showing that ingestion of human medications accounted for over 25% of the calls to their website.
