Vaccinations
At Scott County Animal Hospital, we make individualized vaccination recommendations based on your pet's risk of exposure to disease. There is no cookbook recommendation that we can follow for all pets, because every situation is different. At your pet's annual wellness exam, you will be asked to fill out a risk assessment questionnaire, which allows us to determine your pet's exposure to a number of common diseases. From this, we will build a vaccination program for your pet.
Like humans, young animals require more vaccinations because their exposure to disease is more frequent, and their immune systems are not fully functional. This is the reason for multiple booster vaccinations in the first year of life. After the first year, vaccination frequency will be based on your pet's disease risk.
For dogs and cats with unknown vaccination history, there is no danger in boostering their vaccines as soon as you find or adopt them. Even if they were previously vaccinated, the booster will only increase their immunity.
Please ask one of our staff if you have questions about vaccinations for your dog or cat.
